The aim of this project is to develop an online language learning environment using technologies such as MOO (Multi-User Domain, Object-Oriented) and World Wide Web.
The idea is to create a space where students studying foreign languages can develop their skills and understanding of these languages in new and creative ways and in collaboration with other students from all around the world.
"Dreistadt" is the CALLMOO-prototype, developed for the subject of German Language studies at the University of Bergen, Norway. In August 98 it will be fully operational . Later MOO-projects may include environments for English, French, and Norwegian as a second language.
The CALLMOO project is being directed by Dr. Espen Aarseth of the Department of Humanistic Informatics, University of Bergen, and funded by the Working Group for Digital Learning Resources on behalf of the Norwegian Ministry of Education, Research and Church Affairs. For more in-depth information about CALLMOO see the online project proposal (in Norwegian). CALLMOO is part of the larger Cyber Media Culture umbrella project, also directed by Dr. Aarseth.
